My Experience Volunteering as a student nurse, “Victory Junction”
A camp tailored towards children with chronic medical illnesses
I volunteered at a camp called Victory Junction. A sleep-away camp catered towards kids with chronic medical illnesses/disorders.
I chose this instead of an internship because I wanted to diversify myself into something different and inspiring. These strong and resilient children did more than inspire me, they taught me about the importance of working hard, even when life fights back. I was able to develop new interpersonal and interdisciplinary relationships when overcoming conflict within a team. As well as, learn the importance of delegation when communicating with all members of the healthcare team.
I assisted with the care of children who live with chronic heart-kidney and/or — Lung disorders. I assisted with oxygen tanks, inhalers, wheelchairs, checking implanted ports when assisting on the zip lines, and assisting with emotional support during dialysis. Campers with heart disease were often born with a heart anomaly. Their heart may not have formed correctly, which could require several surgeries to repair. Therefore, I needed to learn about their required pacemakers. Campers with lung disease typically had problems breathing normally. These campers required oxygen, CPAP…
